As part of our continued effort to communicate with our customers we continue to publish a common sense glossary of frequently used terms and phrases in our sector. Check out our answers below to the most commonly asked questions below.


Desktop MFD

  • Still a popular choice in the small business environment and can also be considered alongside larger MFD’s where a balanced deployment of devices is being considered. Used also where space is at a premium or lower volume or functionality requirements are to be considered.

Digital Copying

  • All MFD’s use digital technology and this works in the same way as a scanner, by breaking up the image into dots (dpi – dots per inch). This is in total contrast to analogue technology which took a picture of the document to be copied. Digital technology provides for better quality and a more efficient process.

As part of our continued effort to make communication with our customers as easy and fluid as possible here we are publishing the fourth part of our common sense glossary of frequently used terms and phrases in our sector.


Bypass Tray

  • A bypass tray reduces the risk of a paper jam by offering an alternative short, straight paper path. It enables you to copy straight to originals – such as coloured paper, odd-sized paper or card i.e. materials which cannot be fed (or are impossible to feed) from the regular paper tray inside the device. Bypass trays can handle anywhere from 1 – 100 sheets. Bypass trays that can handle more than one sheet are called stackable bypass trays. Larger Multi-Function Devices (MFDs) will have this facility as standard.

All in Ones

  • A term which is often used to describe multi-function devices (MFDs). An all-in-one device, as the name suggests, is one which performs a variety of functions e.g printing, copying, faxing and scanning. The combination of functionalities in one device offers greater control and efficiency while cutting down on the space used or “footprint” of machines.
